President Jimmy Carter's go-to guy during his presidency was Hamilton Jordan, who just passed away. Jordan helped with elections and served as Carter's chief of staff, though they tried to avoid calling the job "chief of staff" during the Carter years (to appear different than the Haldeman/Haig bosses of the Nixon years).
